For instance, religious narratives frequently derive meaning from binary oppositions. Western monotheisms relate stories that pit good against evil. While some may assume that good and evil name real, material conditions in the world, Saussure’s analysis of language forces us to ask whether good and evil exist prior to Theory for religious studies 18 language or only within the binary relationships of terms in particular languages.

This lack of influence is partly due to his unorthodox writing style, which often mixes traditional forms of academic argument with aphorism and autobiography, and partly due to the fact that many of his works on religion were not translated into English until the late 1980s.
