A child simply learns to act and respond in ways which constitute the beginnings of a grasp of what is involved in engaging in artistic activities. That the possibility of reasoning depends upon this more fundamental level of simply learning how to respond can be shown by means of an example. Imagine someone who came from a country where there was no activity of drama, or anything like it, watching Shakespeare's King Lear several times. He comes to realize that the actors do not really die, and that members of the audience know this.

A particularly clear illustration is the way in which children respond to the reading of a story. Yet learning is necessary for all such responses.
