Because the dossier on Dreyfus was destroyed in 1914, some observers remained unconvinced of his innocence. The publication of Schwartzkoppens memoirs in 1935, which identified Esterhazy as the traitor, erased the last doubts. Not until 1995, however, would the French army officially declare Dreyfus innocent. CHAPTER 2 BEFORE DREYFUS: THE FRENCH POLITICAL CONTEXT The Dreyfus Affair did not take place in political isolation.
His career had been remarkable. A lieutenantcolonel at age thirty-three, four campaigns, six wounds, and the Legion of Honor by age thirty-five, he reached the rank of general at age fortythree. On Clemenceau's recommendation, he was named minister of war. An apparently successful encounter with the German chancellor Bismarck over the hasty incarceration of a French national and a series of popular orders increased his already prodigious renown.
