Educating a child in the minority language is often believed to have the same effect. There is little research in this area. Generally, research finds no difference between the self-concept or self-esteem of bilingual children compared with monolinguals. Self concepts are difficult to measure validly. Tests tend to measure self-report instead, what students are willing or what they prefer to say about themselves, rather than their true, inner self-image. Also, specific language minority situations affect the relationship between personality and bilingualism.
Bilingual children are at the heart of this. Page viii In the last decade, the advantages of bilingualism and multilingualism have become clearer. The cultural, communication, cognitive and curriculum advantages of being a bilingual are increasingly agreed. Yet bilinguals often live in circumstances where there is relatively little power, little political influence, sometimes being marginalized and the targets of racial or ethnic attack. Therefore, this book aims to help reduce the prejudice and stereotyping that surrounds bilingual children and to inform about the beauty of bilingualism.
