The result was dramatically different. Comparison of various forms of experimental shock 31 Instead of responding as usual with a progressive return of activity and vigor, the transfused recipient reverted to a severe state of shock and developed the typical manifestations of irreversibility, including necrosis and hemorrhage of the intestinal mucosa (20). This was strong evidence of a toxin in the shocked liver. The toxin was then identified as of bacterial origin by the further observation that pre-treatment of the donor of the homogenate with antibiotic protected the recipient from developing irreversibility and death.
