Although values, folkways, and traditions will take form to reflect the unique character of educational institutions, the human side of good organizations may be worth emulating. In education, the risk of not doing things right is even higher. A poor-quality product or service can be recycled, but a young person who does not learn or who drops out is hard to salvage—a lost treasure.

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, however, there was an unusual amount of buzzing and whispering in hallways and in the teachers’ lounge. Whenever she approached such gatherings, the conversations abruptly ended. Something was wrong, but she couldn’t put her finger on what it was. Over Christmas she asked the custodian to come to her office.

For example, ten teachers might examine new techniques for teaching poetry; another group might discuss alternative ways of teaching writing to first-graders. The meetings are lively, focused, and collegial. They simultaneously build skills and a sense of community—all core values and expectations of the culture.
