This was one of the ways through which the police were able to locate and arrest hostesses, who usually avoided these high-cost hospitals and sought healthcare from low quality, low-priced, unlicensed clinics, run by unqualified practitioners without any formal medical training. Occasionally when they needed serious surgeries or their regular clients had personal networks with certain doctors, they would go to hospitals for treatment. This was tragically illustrated in the case of Robert Pickton in Coquitlam, British Columbia, who admitted to killing 49 sex workers in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside in the late 1990s-early 2000s. He expressed chilling impunity when explaining that he murdered these women not only because he hated them, but because no one would miss them (Cameron 2010).
