In his various studies of the annual primary productivity cycle in the North Sea, Steemann Nielsen checked the consequences of long incubations and showed that the three-day procedure produced large artefacts due to bacterial growth in the dark bottle (Steemann Nielsen and Jensen, 1957). The contrast between the methodical, but innovative experimentalist, Steemann Nielsen, and Riley, the brilliant analytical thinker whose casual lab manner was legendary, could not have been greater. The message from this vignette is that the productivity methods of the pre-World War II period were good enough to reveal the temporal pattern but not good enough to answer quantitative questions involving primary productivity.

Chambers' (1912) review shows that basic knowledge was in hand to do that in either of two ways: measuring oxygen production with the Winkler method, or measuring carbon dioxide uptake by determining pH changes with indicator dyes. A method for measuring the uptake of phosphate and using a C to P ratio to calculate carbon production soon provided a third method (Mills, 1989). The stage was set for a saltatory advance in the study of plankton production. To assess the seasonal pattern of plant productivity, Apstein had used in situ changes in phytoplankton counts as early as 1910 in the Baltic Sea and Gran did so in Christiania Fjord about the same time.
