From Freire’s perspective, history is of course dynamic and subject to agency. Yet those who control the contemporary curriculum deny history’s dynamic nature; they present instead a distorted view of history. The oppressors understand and deliver history as concrete; that is, the ruling class controls the content that provides an example of the ideals and values furthering their interests. But social reality is understood by examining historical events that shape current conditions and asking students about their interpretations and seeking out alternative explanations for historical events.
