Oaths as a form of worship of god An oath, most simply and universally defined, is citing someone (or something) as witness to the truth of one’s statement. Yet because the purpose of an oath is to make the person to whom it is sworn believe that the swearer’s statement is true, the person or being cited as witness must possess greater authority than the swearer, otherwise the witness adds nothing to the credibility of the swearer. For example, if I attempt to convince my friend that I did indeed lock the door by citing my dog as witness, this oath does not make my statement any more believable, for my dog lacks both the ability to recognize the locking of a door and the power to communicate to my friend the truthfulness of my statement.
