This is often a very challenging task, and it may also be additionally complicated by multiple hydrogen bonding in which water is readily involved. What is even more important, different types of such hydrogen bonding can significantly (and, quantitatively, almost always unpredictably) alter not only the intrinsic vibration frequencies of water contained in the sample in an appreciable proportion, but also those of the functional groups of the sample which are involved in the H-bonding. An alternative way of avoiding water-induced ‘spectroscopic artefacts’ while using ‘wet’ samples in FTIR spectroscopic studies implies the analysis of FTIR absorption regions or selected bands not overlapping with the typical water absorption regions.
