Neither is race, class, or gender. In fact, we view this as a strength of our way of making sense of present moral/schooling efforts. Persons across the contemporary political spectrum, across faith lines, across moral philosophies, and across cultural categories actually share a similar range of responses to the moral/schooling challenge. And we hope our set of categories will facilitate communication about the moral in schooling among those who often end up in warring camps. Neither do our categories differentiate those whose primary interest is moral education from those who are more broadly interested in the moral dimensions of schooling.

All three also reflect an abiding respect for parental prerogatives in the Constructing the Categories 31 moral domain. The first is a fear of values indoctrination and of the controversies that accompany this danger. The second is a respect for the differentiation between church and state. The third is a recognition that both cultural diversity and national identity are at stake in schools as public, democratic institutions. We consider each factor briefly. The Danger of Indoctrination An American culture built on an Enlightenment heritage and a capitalist economic vision relies on individual autonomy and personal responsibility.

2 Constructing the Categories In the Introduction, we made use of the metaphor of mapping terrain in explaining our task. Our point is not that schooling as a moral endeavor is totally unexplored territory or even that interest in this dimension of schooling is new. From its roots, American schooling has had an explicitly moral aspect and that aspect has generated regular comment. Today, as the discussion in the prior chapter suggests, there is a renewed, substantial, and quite varied interest in educational matters from a moral perspective.
