Neither is race, class, or gender. In fact, we view this as a strength of our way of making sense of present moral/schooling efforts. Persons across the contemporary political spectrum, across faith lines, across moral philosophies, and across cultural categories actually share a similar range of responses to the moral/schooling challenge. And we hope our set of categories will facilitate communication about the moral in schooling among those who often end up in warring camps. Neither do our categories differentiate those whose primary interest is moral education from those who are more broadly interested in the moral dimensions of schooling.
All three also reflect an abiding respect for parental prerogatives in the Constructing the Categories 31 moral domain. The first is a fear of values indoctrination and of the controversies that accompany this danger. The second is a respect for the differentiation between church and state.
