Inside, I divide the folder into four or five sections, depending on the number of small groups I will form. I recommend starting with four groups if possible. Don’t try to have more than five groups, because it will be too difficult to keep up with. Then I write each student’s name on a small sticky note and place the kids into groups according to their reading levels and what they need to practice.
How Do I Keep My Groups Straight— Who Read What, Lesson Plans, and So On? Use a small-group lesson-planning notebook as described in this chapter and in Chapter 2. Keep written lesson plans and jot down which books were read in each group. Some teachers also keep a sticky note in this plan book where they jot down the date and title read by this group. Don’t worry if you occasionally have a child in a group tell you he or she has already read a book. Odds are the child will improve during this reading of the text!
Meet with an administrator or literacy coach for help, if needed. Make a flexible reading groups folder. Try it for a while and share what’s worked with another teacher. Work with a colleague to form your flexible groups (or to regroup them). Use the data you’ve collected. Ask each other questions and help each other make decisions about where to place children.
