Copolymerisation of styrene and p-methyl styrene initiated by RLi in benzene X, # X2 New Developments in Ring-Opening Polymerization Takeo Saegusa Department of Synthetic Chemistry, Kyoto University, Kyoto 6 06, Japan Abstract-Several topics among the new developments in the field of ring-opening polymerization are described. , (1) the exploration of new poly merization catalysts, (2) the molecular design of cyclic monomers, and (3) the exploration of new polymerization reactions.

C 2 I ^ o o o o P These ring-opening polymerizations can be combined with the radical polymer ization of conventional vinyl compounds. In other words, the above cyclic monomers can be copolymerized with vinyl compounds to produce polymers containing carbonyl, ester or carbonate linkages in the backbone chains. Thus, the variety of the polymers produced by radical polymerization has been enlarged. From the view point of polymerization chemistry, radical copolymerization between heterocyclic and vinyl monomers is significant because the copolymerization between these two types of monomers through ionic mechanism has been known almost impossible.
