In South Measuring the Costs of Violence There are three ways in which costs of violence have been measured: an accounting approach (calculating accumulated direct and indirect costs of factors to the economy and social multipliers, such as loss of social capital and political participation) - favoured by public health economists; a modeling approach (determining the difference between expected and actual economic growth) - more frequently used to cost the impact of conflict and; a contingent valuation (calculated on the basis of the market, or willingness to pay to improve security).

The crisis, they warn, could plunge millions more children into poverty and exacerbate existing deprivation, harming children today and succeeding generations. Concerns are also being raised that the economic crisis could result in an increase in child labour as low income households struggle to cope104. This situation may be compounded by the poor quality and coverage of basic social services, education and insufficient social protection mechanisms. This increase may expose many more children to hazardous conditions and abuse, and limit their opportunities in later life, trapping more in poverty.
