During this ebook Kaj Grønbæk and Randall H. Trigg current a collection of rules for the layout of open hypermedia platforms and supply concrete implications of those rules for matters starting from facts constructions to architectures and approach integration, and for settings as varied because the world-wide-web and the workplace. The rules, which disguise either hypermedia approach processing and information constructions, mirror effects from many years of hypermedia study, together with the preferred Dexter hypertext reference version and the authors personal prolonged object-oriented model of the Dexter version. One very important precept is the inspiration of hyperlinks as top notch items outdoor the knowledge. rising structures equivalent to HyperWave, Microcosm, and Devise Hypermedia practice this precept to increase the features of the net. The authors additionally talk about the administration of incomplete and dangling hyperlinks, time-based media together with video and sound, aid for collaboration and shared hypermedia buildings, world wide distribution, and integration of third-party purposes in open hypermedia platforms.

The result of the computation is a unique identifier (UID) of a component, which optionally includes an anchor identifier to locate a position within the component's con tents. The UID is then handed to the accessor function, which returns the actual component/anchor. This model of hypermedia computation was particularly well suited to supporting links whose endpoint computations involve searching the hypermedia for components with certain attributes. Directionality should be associated with link endpoints, rather than with links.

The Dexter definition says nothing about how to identify an anchored object deep within that structure. For example, let's suppose we' re implementing the collection composite described in the preceding section. One option is to store local anchors in each component of the collection, which then are identified by anchors in the collection composite. This approach has the advantage of keeping anchors local to the components to which they refer. Such indirect referencing from a composite's anchors through the anchors of subcom ponents is not supported in the Dexter model.

The Dexter group generalized Intermedia's notion of the block (Meyrowitz 1986), a data structure representing points or spans in the material of online documents. The result was the anchor, an abstract object that straddles the boundary between the storage and within-component layers. Certain aspects of the runtime behavior of particular links and nodes must per sist across uses of the system, and thus must be stored with the hypermedia content and structure. The Dexter group defined presentation specifications (pSpecs) to be an entity associated with every component that retains information related to the runtime behavior of the component and its linked neighbors.
