Baum astutely reminds us that these problems of self and anthropology have echoes back into the origins of sociology itself, in the writings of Troeltsch. The mind of the sociologist belongs to a certain world, a culture and a biography, that risks being changed by what it encounters. 19 This raises an endless issue of the nature of sociology's dialogue with itself, its moral responsibilities, its analytical biases, but above all what it is conventional to say. As part of the humanities and influenced by the Romantic movement, Gouldner argues that sociology has sought to increase its knowledge, its self-awareness of what it is possible to know.

In a cosmopolitan postmodern order, where images are real and unreal, and where pastiche rules in a deceiving and ambiguous manner, issues of risk and trust have emerged. Detachment and attachment to the social order is increasingly a matter of investment of the self. A notion is presented in the politics of lifestyle, that selfcreation is an endless possibility. But appearances can deceive. A self that is manufactured is inauthentic and there is always the possibility of a sociologist being fooled by misreading an ambiguous condition.

This theme has been pursued by Stanley, who has drawn attention to the way Merton has revolutionised the notion of sociological autobiography. Perspectives, ideas, concepts, findings and analytical procedures reflect a history written into the larger tale of the times. She argues that reflexivity points to a lived experience, a 'consciousness raising'. 16 Whatever else feminism has accomplished within sociology, it has freed the discipline from the fiction that it can produce texts about society without reference to the self of the sociologist.
