Whilst many couples adjust to these changes, ‘This asymmetrical growth from dependence to independence is a major psychological 38 Couples, conflict, and change contribution to marital breakdown’ (Dominian 1980:27), especially if it coincides with some of the other problems outlined above.

The aim of this chapter is to explore the nature of the evidence about marital problems, since an awareness of such evidence must be an important factor in the ability of social workers to be sensitive to and aware of the existence of marital problems in the lives of their clients, and the ways such problems might be generated. There are two major difficulties in attempting to achieve such an understanding.
