The Trois Andantes Romantiques op 13 published in 1837 are more intimate pieces than the virtuoso op 12 set but these show a similar advance in compositional confidence. The opening with its rising melody and increased level of dynamics moves towards a French sixth harmonic tension. Perhaps the ‘romantic’ nature of this étude is typified by the principal melody at bar 9 which is almost a self-parody given its short-breathed, repetitive, over sequential and highly triadic nature. This 42 Charles Valentin Alkan – His Life and His Music neutral melody is then subjected to extensive ‘vocal’ decoration and transferred into the left hand with a Schubertian use of the Neapolitan sixth harmonic shift (F/G flat major): thereafter follows a further decorated version in G flat major.

Grisez and M. Mas. At the second concert135 on 5 March 1874 Alkan performed the adagio and saltarella from his Violoncello Sonata op 47. For pedal piano Alkan performed two Mendelssohn works and two Bach chorales. For piano solos Alkan played one of the Beethoven sonatas op 2, a polonaise and scherzo by Weber and various pieces by Schubert and Scarlatti. The third and fourth concerts136 on 19 March and 3 April included the first Étude op 35, the first part of the Second Concerto da camera, the ancient Jewish Melodies [from Preludes op 31], some chants, prières and the two Marches op 26/27.

For the last two programmes Alkan’s final items are baroque works and the last concert of the 1875 series is a particularly well balanced programme with Bach chorales and other works including Haydn, Mozart (the F major sonata for four hands with SaintSaëns), and Mendelssohn works as well as Alkan’s magnificent violoncello sonata op 47. The austere F minor mazurka and the radiant third ballade of Chopin provide the romantic period works. The 1876 series was cancelled140 because of alterations to the Salle Erard.
