The presence of overseas Christian corporations in China, besides the fact that, isn't new. Christian missionaries went to China within the age of imperialism. Historians argue the paintings of missionaries was once inextricably associated with the belief of a ‘civilizing mission’. This e-book severely assesses the assumption of a Christian ‘civilizing project’ through the years, and explores the relevance of the belief to the modern context. via studying the non-Han people’s conception of foreign Christian businesses, this booklet advocates the significance of engagement via in-depth discussion among foreign Christian NGOs and ethnic groups.

As in his earlier books (Holy Blood, Holy Grail; The Jesus Papers), Baigent attempts to discover the darkish forceshiding within the shadows of faith and ferret out fundamentalists whose dogmatism frequently turns to violence. concentrating on the tip occasions, he warns that robust fundamentalist sects in Christianity, Judaism and Islam are operating to lead to the conflict of Armageddon, while the forces of darkness may be destroyed via the Messiah, who will then result in a brand new reign. All 3 teams wish Jerusalem, the place every one lays declare to a actual spot, the Dome of the Rock, as a sacred position in its heritage; all 3 desire a country during which politics are subservient to faith. Baigent makes a similar mistake that the fundamentalists make whilst interpreting the booklet of Revelation. it isn't a publication of prophecy and handbook for scary sinners again into the fold; it's apocalyptic literature that makes use of symbols as mystery codes for the situation within the lives of first- and second-century Christians, providing them wish for escaping from their plights. unfortunately, Baigent's well-intentioned exposé seems to be little greater than a screed opposed to fundamentalism that's in keeping with a misreading of his principal textual content. I spent up to four days with NGO staff members at each project site, observing their interaction with the ethnic community members. Specifically, their informal interaction while chatting in the villagers’ houses and sharing meals with the villagers was very insightful. Villagers often do not wish to speak to, or in front of, an outsider such as the author in a formal setting. Observing informal interaction afforded me opportunities to observe typical activity on a day-to-day basis. The Fine Line of “Universal Values” By comparing the interactions at the turn of the twentieth century with those of the twenty-first century, this book reveals that international secular and religious agencies commonly believe in socalled universal values that are supposed to improve the lives of the recipients of their projects.
4 Sadahiro Ishikawa (1994) claims that the direct origin of the term wenming lies in the Japanese term, bunmei, made up of the same Chinese characters as the Chinese term wenming. 5 Chinese governmental and opinion leaders, such as Liang Qichao at the turn of the century, conceptualized the concept of wenming in regard to the West as the center of civilization. This concept is apparent, for example, in Shiwubao, a periodical publication established by a group of reformists including Wang Kangnian and Liang Qichao, and may be seen in comments such as: When I see London I see not just apples on a branch, but also a capital city of contemporary civilization (wenming) with a history of over two thousand years.
One of the determinants of the nature of the stateethnic minority relationships is how the state has defined the concept of civilization. ” Although the central purpose of this book is to understand the interaction between international Christian agencies and ethnic community members, the impact of the state on any such interaction cannot be neglected. This chapter discusses the historical transformation of the relationships between the state and ethnic minorities from the Chinese state’s perspective since the Qing period, and interprets the state’s views and policies on ethnic minorities in order to understand the transformation of the Chinese concept of civilization.
