London had always had an Irish population. In 1780, about 20,000 Irish men and women were living in St Giles (known locally as Little Dublin) and in the East End, but it was in the mid-nineteenth century that immigration from Ireland reached its peak. Table 1 shows immigration figures for the years 1841 to 1891. The famine of the mid-1840s drove starving agricultural workers to seek work and food outside Ireland.
