In November 1999 Sally Clark was found guilty by majority verdicts of murdering both babies. She was sentenced to life imprisonment. In October 2000 the case was heard by the Court of Appeal. The Appeal Court judges accepted that expert-witness evidence presented by the prosecution at the original trial was now understood to be unreliable.

We reiterate the conclusions of Reder & Duncan (1999): it is parental behaviour, rather than psychiatric diagnosis or lack of it, that is the key child protection assessment factor. Consequently, psychiatric assessments must be complemented by risk assessments focused on the psychosocial context of parental behaviour, and the potential for change regarding these concerns.
